Bestselling Cell Phones - Week ending July 2nd, 2010

Here is this week's bestselling cell phones in America with a  couple of surprises.

5. The HTC DROID INCREDIBLE has a 4 star rating from more than 75 customer reviews. The built-in 8-mega pixel camera with LED flash is what makes this the best cell phone for taking pictures.  You can crop photos, apply different effects and post them to your favorite social networking site directly from the phone.  The camera also operates as a video camera. It boasts a decent 3.7 color inch screen and has GPS with turn-by-turn directions.  You can ditch your portable GPS.  You also get WiFi with optional Hotspot capability; Bluetooth stereo music. With thousands of Android applications this is a good iPhone alternative.
4. HTC Tilt2 Windows Phone dropping from 3rd place last week.  The HTC Tilt 2 is a Windows smart phone with a full QWERTY-keyboard that slides out and tilts to make it easy to send emails.  The phone runs on the updated Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, features a large 3.6-inch screen and a 3.2 mega-pixel camera/camcorder.  Bluetooth stereo music, integrated Wi-Fi networking, and up to 8.5 hours of talk-time make this a great phone.
Samsung Rugby II Phone, Black (AT&T)
Rugby II
3. Samsung Rugby II Phone Up from the #5 spot last week, this phone is quickly climbing the bestseller list and for good reason.  Sometimes you just want a phone to be a phone. The Rugby II is an updated flip phone with a military-grade clamshell. In fact, the Rugby 2 is certified to military standard MIL-STD-810G to withstand dust, shock, vibration, rain, humidity, solar radiation, altitude and temperature extremes. Further enhancing its communication capabilities is a push-to-talk feature, noise suppression technology and an external speaker.
2. HTC Aria Android Phone is debuting in the #2 spot this week knocking Motorola off our list for the first time.  The HTC Aria has received an impressive 4.5 stars from only 4 customer reviews so far.  This smart phone is available for 1-cent for a very limited time.  Click here to learn more about the 1-cent promotion.

Microsoft kills of its Kin

The Wall Street Journal tweeted today that Microsoft axed the Kin. It appears that Microsoft's timing could have been better. The Kin was released while Apple fans lined up to buy the latest version of the iPhone. Apple has made a huge comeback in recent years. The fact that the iPhone sold out so quickly tells you that Apple knows what its customers want and delivers it to them. It looks like Microsoft is guessing what their customers want and is off target. For now at least, Microsoft's loss is your gain. If you are into social networking and don't need all of those iPhone apps, then the Kin is worth the look. It really is a good phone for what it does. You can buy the Microsoft Kin for a penny while supplies last. You can also check out a Microsoft Kin review here. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to seeing Microsoft's next innovation.

Best prepaid cell phones for saving money

I'm willing to bet that most cell phone users are paying more than they should, but those pesky contracts keep them locked in.  I decided to do some research to determine which are the best prepaid cell phones for saving money. When it comes to cell phones there is a dizzying array of choices.  Once you decide on the phone the next step is to pick out a plan to go with it.  There is also an insane amount of choices to be made when picking out a contract.  How many minutes?  How many texts?  Do you want web access?  Then if your needs change, forget about it.  You either pay a whopping early termination fee that costs more than the phone or get stuck paying for something you no longer need.

Based on my research, I was able to come up with  two really fantastic inexpensive prepaid phones with features that are similar to the phones you find on the more expensive contract plans.  I originally started out with a list of ten phones and narrowed it down these two.

1. Nokia 2320 Prepaid cell phone 4.5 stars  9 reviews
Nokia 2320 Prepaid GoPhone, Silver (AT&T) with $15 Airtime Credit
Nokia 2320
If you are looking for a pre-paid cell phone where the primary use is talking, then the Nokia 2320 is your best choice.  It is a solid, inexpensive phone with features like 56 Mb memory, phonebook, and speakerphone.  Also, the phone does support texting, email and web access. Since this is a 2G phone, data access will be slower than on 3G phones.  Another great feature is its 360 minutes of talk-time made possible by a powerful lithium-ion rechargeable battery.  If you use this phone with AT&T there will be no annual contract or credit check and no domestic long distance or roaming charges.  You have two choices for buying minutes:  Either pay a flat 25-cents per minute; or $1.00 per day of use and get unlimited mobile-to-mobile minutes and 10-cent anytime minutes.

2. Samsung Mantra Prepaid Phone  4.5 stars 3 reviews
Samsung Mantra Prepaid Phone (Virgin Mobile)
Samsung Mantra
The Samsung Mantra is a sleek, stylish flip phone.  This is the best prepaid cell phone if you want to do everything - talk, surf the web and access social networks.  This is a feature-rich phone that includes a VGA digital camera, bluetooth connectivity, external caller-id, bi-lingual English/Spanish menus, speakerphone, simple user interface and large keypad.  There is also a calendar, alarm clock and calculator.  If you use this phone on Virgin's network you will only pay for the minutes used.  The cost per minute varies between 5-cents and 10-cents per minute.  The more minutes you buy, the lower the cost per minute.  Virgin also offers a $29.99 monthly plan without an annual contract.  The cost for web access on the pay-as-you-go plan is $5 per month for 5Mb and $20 per month for 50Mb. Texting adds another $5 per month for 200 texts.

You're probably wondering how did the Samsung Mantra make the list with only 3 reviews?  First, the reviews are very good.  Second, Virgin Mobile offers very good choices for the budget-minded mobile consumer.  Finally, Samsung makes a great phone and Virgin Mobile offers great service.  That's how I came up with the two best prepaid cell phones for saving money.

A hip smart phone kin for sharing

Microsoft KIN One
The Microsoft Kin is a hip new smart phone for social network users. Powered by Windows, the Kin allows you to share just about everything with everyone. Sharing is easy. At the bottom of the screen is a small green dot, called the Spot. When you find something you want to share like a web post, photo, Facebook page, video, map location or anything else you can imagine -- just drag and drop it on the Spot and send it. You can group your favorite contacts into a KIN Loop to make sharing even faster.

A really nice feature is the slide-out full QWERTY keyboard which makes it easy to respond to emails and surf the web. If the 2.6-inch touch screen display is too small, consider the KIN Two which has a much larger 3.4-inch screen. A 5.4 mega-pixel camera with anti-shake technology helps you snap really nice pictures and share them with one touch.

This is the first Windows phone to include Zune. With a Zune Pass subscription you can listen to songs on your KIN from the Zune Marketplace or load songs from your personal collection. The KIN includes a free 14-day Zune Pass trial. After the trial Zune Pass costs $14.99 per month.

These new phones are great and they can do a lot of amazing things. The problem has always been not having enough storage room on the phone and you end up having to keep swapping out memory cards. A nice feature called KIN Studio solves this problem very elegantly by backing everything up to a private, password protected website. This gives you virtually unlimited storage capacity with the added benefit of being able to share your phone's contacts with any web-connected PC.

All in all, the Microsoft KIN is a great phone that makes it easy to stay in touch anyway you want.
